Drawing and Painting figures is a passion for me that never seems to go away. When the opporturnity to work from a live model happens, I am excited and motivated to create a compositiion that derives from my delight in capturing energy and a strong expressive attitude using the selected media.
Often I choose soft pastel and at least one other medium such as watercolor that is added to the development of the overall composition for the purpose of capturing the gesture, posture and attitude of the model.
I feel that it is important to teach figurative drawing and painting to students, as it opens up a broader understanding of energetic marks as an important component to creating artwork. This process is always a bit scary, informative and eventually fun for students.
Once they see how the figure can be expressed through observation, and a variety of media, it usually becomes a fascinating subject to tackle that' s less scary and no longer off limits, because they once thought it was too hard.
