"Tiger Lillies at the Fine Line" Oil Pastel on Yuppo
By Carol L Zack
My landscape paintings of the midwest capture the land
I call home. Rich pastures, knarly trees, wandering rivers and babbling brooks, big and small. It is a peaceful and productive land. For me, a wonderful journey of expression, capturing places I have visited close to home. Articulating my impressions with both soft and oil pastel has been spontaneous and lucid.
As a pastel painter, I have the freedom to choose various papers and mat boards to express my visual experiences with the virtuousity that oil pastel allows. When using soft pastel, I select and use sanded papers which allow and grab many layers of pigment that are added to the surface to create luminous effects.
I have enjoyed working both in my studio and on location (Plien Air) to develop paintings slowly and deliberately or many times quickly as the light changes before me influenced by impressionistic tendencies. Energetic strokes are appealing and help to showcase the painterly techniques I enjoy incorporating into each painting.
In every case, pastel has been the medium of choice to capture my impression and feeling about what I observe in nature. With oil pastel or soft pastel, I approach the painting directly with initial broad strokes to identify the entire composition within a few seconds. I also enjoy using a gel medium rubbed into the broad strokes to join all the colors into a toned underpainting with oil pastel.
I do something similar with soft pastel by using a turpenoid or mineral spirits wash using a large flat 2" brush to do the same technique with soft pastel. It is important to provide an integrated surface of grayed dark colors first so the brighter and lighter pastels can be layered over the top. Still for other paintings, I begin by layering torn pieces of colored tissue paper on the bottom layer. The sheer layering of the layers of tissue paper is then integrated with oil pastel.
Very little drawing is done and shows up on the top layers of the painting. The culmination of shapes, values, color and edges are developed over many layers of pastel that are integrated into a complex visual surface to be enjoyed both from afar and near.
All the original, on-of-a-kind pastel paintings shown on this page are available for purchase. They are mostly framed with archival double white mats in metal Nielson frames and measure approximately 6-8 inches bigger with the mats and frame. An investment in a one-of-a-kind original work of art is something to enjoy for many years to come and is a lasting and beautiful addition to your surroundings.
